We’ve all known and loved those classic chalky candy hearts for Valentine’s – in fact they have been around since 1901, invented by the Chase brothers, founders of the candy company, Necco.
Necco produced over 8 billion candy hearts each year, until their sudden bankruptcy mid 2018, leaving Americans freaking out all over the internet that there would be no candy hearts available for Valentine’s of 2019. After the Sweethearts brand was bought out by Spangler Candy Company, consumers waited patiently for candy hearts, only to be disappointed by blank and mis-printed candy in 2020.
MyCustomCandy, who custom prints on conversation heart candies for their clients, formulated and shaped their own candy conversation hearts in late 2018 after news of Necco shutting down were broadcasted. The new candy hearts had the same shape and size of the classic Necco hearts, but had improved flavors and a more printable texture.
With Americans panicking that candy hearts weren’t available, they flocked to the MyCustomCandy site to get their candy hearts fix and designed their own hearts with custom sayings.
The sayings varied from sweet and tender to naughty and just plain mean. While some Valentine’s lovers chose classic phrases like “love you forever”; others cussed out exes with phrased like “never again” and “i hate you”.
The thousands of orders were tallied up to see whether people were sweet, naughty or mean this valentines. The overall tally came in with the majority being sweet (62%) but following in second, 27% were naughty and then 11% were just outright mean.

MyCustomCandy then compiled their orders by state to share which states were the most naughty, nice or downright nasty with their candy hearts messaging and here is how they rolled in:
Alabama: NICE
While there were a few nasties in the mix like “LAZY BUTT” and “FATTY”, the majority of Alabamians came in NICE with sayings like:
“SIMPLY IN LOVE” and “BETTER WITH AGE”.
Alaska: NICE
Alaska had nothing but love to share this Valentine’s with phrases like:
“LOVE YA” and “SWEETIE PIE”
Arizona: NAUGHTY
While a few of the Valentine’s lovers in Arizona stuck with traditional phrases like “I LOVE YOU”, the majority went naughty and outright inappropriate with phrases like:
“JUST THE TIP”; “MIND IF MY MONKEY WATCHES?”; “SLUT”; “MISSIONARY” and “RUB RUB RUB”
Arkansas: NICE
Arkansas came in with pure, clean love for Valentines with sayings like:
“BEAUTIFUL WIFE” and “MY LOVE”
California: NAUGHTY
California went full on naughty with sayings we can’t even publish as well as others like: “SEND NUDES”; “TOO DEEP”; “I’VE HAD BETTER” and “PULL OUT”
Colorado: NICE
While Colorado had its share of weed-related “GET HIGH” type messaging, the majority choose sweet and even went as lovely as saying like:
“#1 DAD” and “MY GIRL”
Connecticut: NAUGHTY
There were a few sweets in there like “HAPPILY EVER AFTER” but the majority were naughty with sayings like:
“TURN ME ON” and “SEX WITH ME IS LIKE”
Delaware: NICE
Delaware came in as sweet and innocent as can be with kiss emojis and sayings like: “LOVE YOU FOREVER”
Florida: NAUGHTY
Florida got just down right weird as expected with sayings like:
“LICK ME”, “SUCK ME BOO”, “FULL MOUNT” and “REAR NAKED”
Georgia: NICE
Georgia is for lovers, even millennial lovers with phrases like:
“I DELETED TINDER”, “DO WHAT YOU LOVE” and “LOVE 2 LOVE YOU”
Hawaii: NICE
Hawaii was just as we expected, calm and full of love with phrases like:
“ALOHA NUI LOA”, “MAHALO” and “LOCAL LOVE”
Idaho: NICE
Idaho came through with pure love for Valentines with classic phrases like:
“YOU’RE MINE” and “LOVE YOU FOREVER”
Illinois: NAUGHTY
Illinois was deceptively sweet, but snuck in all the appropriate puns ever so stealthily with phrases like:
“YOU GIVE ME A HEART ON” and “BE MY HARDNESS”
Indiana: NICE
We’ve never seen phrases as sweet as Indiana. They kept it classic and clean with phrases like:
“YOU’RE AN ANGEL”, “MY BEST FRIEND”, “LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT” and “I LOVE YOU”
Iowa: MEAN
While not all of Iowa was mean, the majority chose insults over love for Valentine’s with phrases like:
“BITCH PLEASE” and “MOTHER F#$CKER”
Kansas: NICE
Kansas was all love with sayings like:
“I LOVE YOU”, and “4 EVER & ALWAYS”
Louisiana: NICE
Louisiana was nice and clever with sayings like:
“I GOT ROUX BABE” and “BE MINE FOREVER”
Maine: NICE
Maine came in clean and a bit organic with phrases like:
“I LOVE KALE” and “MY MAINE LOVER”
Maryland: NICE
While some of Maryland came in a little weird with phrases like “DRUNK CHICK” and “TICKLE ME” the majority were just downright sweet with sayings like:
“GAL PAL”, “YOU + ME FOREVER” and “YOU HAVE MY HEART”
Massachusetts: NAUGHTY
Massachusetts was not the most inappropriate that we’ve ever seen but still in the naughty category with phrases like:
“DAT ASS”, “BACK IT UP” and “CRAZY NIGHTS”
Michigan: NICE
Well Michigan was partially naughty with phrases like “BE MY HARDNESS” but came in majority nice with sayings like:
“ENTHRALL ME”, “LOVE YOURSELF” and “GOD IS LOVE”
Minnesota: NICE
Aww Minnesota, pure sweet on Valentines with phrases like:
“LOVE YA 4EVA”, “KISS ME” and “HUG ME”
Mississippi: NICE

Those north carolina loves were all nice during Valentine’s with sayings like:

Just as we expected, Oregon was simply sweet with phrases like:

Nothing surprising from Pennsylvania, just pure sweetness with sayings like:

While a lot of Rhode Island was actually quite sweet, the naughty majority won over with phrases like:
